~~HELPFUL HEATING AND COOLING TIPS

WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE, YOU CAN EXTEND THE LIFE AND PERFORMANCE OF YOUR HEATING AND COOLING EQUIPMENT. HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE TIPS TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR SYSTEM:
• REPLACE OR CLEAN YOUR FILTERS ONCE A MONTH.
• SET THE THERMOSTAT TO A TEMPERATURE THAT IS COMFORTABLE TO YOU. AVOID TURNING THE HVAC UNIT ON AND OFF, OR THE THERMOSTAT UP AND DOWN.
• AVOID BLOCKING THE FLOOR VENTS WITH FURNITURE. KEEP ALL FLOOR VENTS OPEN.
• RUN YOUR CEILING FANS TO HELP DISPERSE AIR EVENLY IN YOUR HOME.
• DO NOT PLACE A LAMP, TV, OR ANY OTHER HEAT –PRODUCING ITEM NEAR THE THERMOSTAT. THE HEAT GENERATED MAY CAUSE YOUR HVAC EQUIPMENT TO WORK IMPROPERLY.
• KEEP THE DRAIN HOSE FREE FROM BLOCKAGE. THE DRAIN HOSE REMOVES THE CONDENSATION FROM THE INSIDE AT THE A-COIL. SECURE THE HOSE AWAY AND OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOUSE. IF THE HOSE BECOMES BLOCKED OR KINKED WATER MAY SPILL ONTO YOUR FLOOR AT THE FURNACE.

OTHER ENERGY SAVING TIPS

• INSTALLING SKIRTING AND A VAPOR BARRIER HELP CONTROL THE HUMIDITY IN YOUR HOME.
• KEEP THE OUTDOOR UNIT FREE FROM LAWN TRIMMINGS AND DIRT. HOSE DOWN THE UNIT WITH WATER SEMI-ANNUALLY. (DO NOT APPLY WITH HIGH WATER PRESSURE.)
• DO NOT BUILD A DECK OR ANY STRUCTURE OVER THE TOP OF THE OUTDOOR UNIT. AIR IS DISCHARGED FROM THE TOP OF THE UNIT.
• COVER YOUR WINDOWS WITH DRAPES OR MINI-BLINDS TO REDUCE HEAT FROM THE SUN’S RAYS.
• IF YOUR HOME HAS A METAL ROOF, COAT THE ROOF WITH KOOL-SEAL. (PREFERABLY WHITE)

TROUBLESHOOTING

• IF THE HEATING OR COOLING SYSTEM FAILS TO COME ON, CHECK YOUR BREAKERS IN THE BREAKER BOX, AT THE FURNACE, OR AT THE OUTSIDE SERVICE BOX TO ENSURE THEY ARE NOT TRIPPED.
• MAKE SURE THE THERMOSTAT IS IN THE HEATING (TO THE RIGHT) OR COOLING (TO THE LEFT) POSITION.
• FOR AIRFLOW PROBLEMS IN DOUBLE WIDES, CHECK THE CROSSOVER DUCT UNDERNEATH THE HOME TO ENSURE IT IS ATTACHED AND FREE FROM ANY TEARS. CROSSOVER DUCT THAT HAS BECOME UNATTACHED OR HAS TEARS IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY.
• HEAT PUMPS HAVE A DEFROST CYCLE. THE PURPOSE OF A DEFROST CYCLE IS TO REMOVE A THIN LAYER OF ICE OFF THE OUTSIDE COIL. WHEN THE OUTSIDE UNIT FAN SHUTS OFF, IT IS NORMAL TO SEE A VAPOR OF SMOKE AND TO HEAR A HUMMING SOUND COMING FROM THE COMPRESSOR. YOU WILL ALSO SEE WATER AT THE BASE OF THE UNIT AFTER THE DEFROST CYCLE HAS FINISHED.
• IF THERE IS SIGNIFICANT ICE BUILD UP ON THE OUTDOOR UNIT, SWITCH THE THERMOSTAT TO THE COOLING MODE FOR A FEW MINUTES TO MELT THE ICE OFF THE COIL. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, SWITCH TO EMERGENCY HEAT AND CALL NORTHGATE PARTS.
